SUGGESTIONS TO A POTENTIAL BUYER
Before you purchase a beagle please read up on the breed with a good beagle book. One that I recommend is The New Beagle By Judy Musladin and Ada Leuke. Doing this will make you familiar with the beagles characteristics habits and care. The best way to become familiar with the breed is to attend some dog shows and talk with some breeders and socialize and spend some time socializing with the breed. Once you have completed your reading and introduction to the beagle, ask to be put onto a breeders waiting list either for a pet beagle or a show beagle. Breeders who have show quality puppies would prefer them to go to a home that will have him shown to his championship as this is there goal to keep improving the betterment of the breed and through dog shows this is the only way we can accomplish this .
Beagles are a very popular breed so you may have to wait from one month to one year or more. Remember a puppy is a lot of work bringing up and you have to expect accidents with potty training as they have small bladders and need consistent training in this area. Beagles also get into mischief so you must be with him supervised so you can train him to be a good adult dog. Beagles are a scent hound, so their nose is always to the ground and being inquisitive. This is why they must have a fenced in yard or area where they will be spending there time outside. Beagles love to eat therefore you must not give them table food or extra treats ,this will also help in preventing heart problems and back problems down the road by having to much weight on them. Beagles are also prone to ear infections because of there floppy ears that hang down which does not allow for the right amount of air to get into the ears. Overall beagles are a wash-n-wear dog that makes a wonderful dog for children because they can take a little rough housing and are a small dog with merry little temperaments.
